Fleming Island – Chronic Cough Research Study

Do you have a cough that just won’t go away?

Fleming Island Center for Clinical Research is conducting a new observational research study to better understand chronic cough and how it affects daily life. Researchers are studying how often people cough and how chronic cough impacts sleep, work, and overall well-being.

Participants will wear a small cough monitoring device for about 4 weeks to help measure cough frequency and patterns.

Your participation could help researchers learn more about chronic cough and support the development of better treatments in the future.

No study medication is involved.

About This Study

A cough that lasts more than 8 weeks is considered chronic. For some people, the cause of the cough may remain unclear or continue even after trying multiple treatments.

This study focuses on people who may have:

  • Refractory Chronic Cough (RCC) – a cough that continues despite treatment
  • Unexplained Chronic Cough (UCC) – a cough where the cause cannot be identified

Researchers will collect information about cough frequency and its impact on quality of life.

Who May Qualify

You may be able to participate if you:

  • Are 21 years of age or older
  • Have had a persistent cough lasting longer than 8 weeks
  • Have already seen healthcare providers about your cough
  • Have tried treatments or tests to determine the cause of your cough
  • Are willing to wear a cough monitoring device for 4 weeks
  • Are able to use a smartphone with the monitoring device

Participants are typically individuals who have been evaluated by specialists such as:

  • Pulmonologists (lung specialists)
  • ENT (ear, nose, and throat specialists)
  • Allergy or immunology specialists

Living with COPD? You May Qualify for a Research Study

Fleming Island Center for Clinical Research is currently enrolling volunteers for a new clinical research study for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Compensation up to $950 may be available for study-related time and travel.
No insurance is required to participate.
All study-related care is provided at no cost.

What is COPD?

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive lung condition that makes it difficult to breathe. It is commonly caused by long-term exposure to lung irritants, especially cigarette smoke.

Common symptoms of COPD include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chronic cough
  • Wheezing
  • Frequent respiratory infections
  • Increased mucus production

COPD can affect daily activities and overall quality of life. Research studies like this one help scientists develop better ways to manage and treat COPD.

Who May Qualify

You may be eligible to participate if you:

  • Are 40 to 80 years old
  • Have been diagnosed with COPD or are experiencing COPD symptoms
  • Are a current or former cigarette smoker
  • Have a history of smoking for 10 or more years

What is an abdominal aortic aneurysm?

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a bulge in the aorta (the main artery leaving the heart) caused by a weakening in the artery wall. If left untreated, this bulge may continue to grow and possibly rupture (break open), causing serious internal bleeding.

If you or someone you know has AAA, you may qualify for our research study.
