    • Fleming Island Study (VICTORION-1)
    • St. Augustine Study (VICTORION-1)
    Fleming Island Study (VICTORION-1)

    Cardiovascular Disease Risk Research

Is your LDL cholesterol between 70 and 190? If so, you may be at risk for major cardiovascular events even if you are not experiencing heart symptoms. Preventing a heart attack and stroke is the best line of defense. Cardiovascular disease can cause major cardiovascular events including heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death. Research on new medications is needed to help prevent major cardiovascular events.

We are conducting a research study for volunteers that will evaluate an investigational preventative medication for patients with an increased risk of Cardiovascular Disease.

You may be eligible if you:

    • Are 40-79 years old
    • Have LDL cholesterol levels between 70 and 190 mg/dL
    • Have NOT had a major cardiovascular event such as heart attack or stroke
    • Are at an increased risk of a first major cardiovascular event, defined by one or more of the following:
      • Coronary artery disease (CAD)
      • High coronary artery calcium (CAC) score
      • Elevated Lipoprotein (a) or hsCRP
      • South Asian Ancestry
      • A family member with cardiovascular disease
      • Pregnancy complications (preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, or gestational diabetes)
      • Metabolic syndrome
      • Chronic Inflammatory disorders including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus (SLE), psoriasis (>10% of the body), Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or HIV/AIDS

There are additional criteria to meet to qualify for this study. Volunteers who qualify for our study will receive study-related medication and medical exams at no cost, along with a stipend for time and travel. No health insurance is required to participate.

      Painful Lumbosacral Radiculopathy (Sciatica)

Painful lumbosacral radiculopathy, commonly known as sciatica, is a specific kind of low back pain due to inflammation or pinching of a spinal nerve. It presents as electric, burning, and/or sharp pain in the lower back which may radiate into the legs. Researchers are currently investigating a method of targeting lumbosacral radiculopathy pain by preventing peripheral nerves from sending pain signals.

Fleming Island Center for Clinical Research is conducting a research study that will evaluate an investigational medication for Painful Lumbosacral Radiculopathy (sciatica).

You may be eligible to participate if you:

      • Are 18-70 years old
      • Are over 100 pounds with a BMI under 40
      • Have been diagnosed with painful lumbosacral radiculopathy (sciatica) for at least 3 months; with leg pain worse than back pain
      • Have not used opioids for chronic pain in the last 3 months or taken opioids for more than 7 days for acute pain in the past 3 months.

There are additional criteria to meet to qualify for this study. Volunteers who qualify for our study will receive study-related medication and medical exams at no cost, along with compensation for study-related time and reimbursement for travel. When someone has atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and/or chronic kidney disease (CKD), it’s important to lower the risk of events such as heart attacks, strokes, and kidney function decline. These risks may be linked to obesity and changes in metabolism. Medications that target cardiometabolic markers, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, and body weight may also help improve cardiovascular and kidney outcomes. Research is needed for investigational medications that may improve ASCVD and CKD outcomes in patients who are overweight or obese.

To learn about clinical trials for ASCVD and CKD call our Fleming Island office:

          Inverness Study #1 (Pursuit)

          High LDL Cholesterol Research

Dyslipidemia is one of the major risks for the leading cause of mortality worldwide, cardiovascular disease. Dyslipidemia means abnormal levels of fats (lipids) in the blood. Extra fats in the blood can accumulate in the arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. A particularly dangerous type of fat is low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, often abbreviated to LDL-C. Statins have traditionally been the go-to medication to treat high cholesterol, but some patients continue to have persistently high LDL-C despite taking these medications. Some researchers hope to fight high cholesterol using a new class of medication called PCSK9 inhibitors that may help the body break down LDL-C and reduce cholesterol levels.

Nature Coast Clinical Research – Inverness is conducting a research study to evaluate a new investigational PCSK9 inhibitor medication for dyslipidemia.

You may be eligible to participate if you:

          • Are 18-75 years old
          • Have high LDL-C Cholesterol (70-189)
          • Are on daily moderate or high-dose statin therapy
            • Atorvastatin 10+ mg
            • Lovastatin 40+ mg
            • Pravastatin 40+ mg
            • Rosuvastatin 5+ mg

          January 30, 2020

What was I doing? How often do we find ourselves asking this frustrating question?  First, we begin to worry that there may be something going on with our memory. Then, we wonder who can help us. This is what motivated JCCR’s CEO, Michael Koren, M.D. to begin the process of developing our Memory Program. The program was designed to offer people 60 years old or older an opportunity to be evaluated and tested in a comfortable, private setting.
The visit involves an assessment of your medical history and medications, a discussion of any concerns, and a verbal memory test.  If you are interested in a confidential memory screening, please call one of these offices:
Jacksonville Center for Clinical Research       (904) 730-0166
Fleming Island Center for Clinical Research       (904) 621-0390

          • What to Expect During Our Free Memory Screening
What to Expect During Our Free Memory Screening

*This assessment is only available at Jacksonville Center for Clinical Research and Fleming Island Center for Clinical Research*

If you are experiencing memory loss, you are not alone. Roughly 40% of the population 65 and older experience associated memory impairment, according to the National Institutes of Health. Dementia is the broad category of cognitive impairment with subtypes like Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy Bodies, Vascular Dementia, and others.  Although there have been many breakthroughs in memory research, there is still no cure for memory loss.

          What is a Memory Assessment?

A memory assessment tests for cognitive impairment. The assessment is a 30-point test and is widely used for assessing dementia and Alzheimers. The type of  test we use is known as the MMSE or mini-mental state exam. The MMSE assessment is a key step toward making a diagnosis.

          Who Should Be Tested?

Memory loss can be a sign of aging. However, there are differences between normal signs of aging and memory loss that can lead to dementia and other diseases. If you are still able to work or live independently it is likely that you are just showing signs of age-related memory loss. On the other hand, if your memory loss is disrupting your life, it is time for a memory assessment.

Other signs to look out for include:

          • Asking the same questions repeatedly
          • Forgetting common words while speaking
          • Mixing up uncommon words like “Chair” and “TV’
          • Taking longer to complete familiar tasks
          • Putting items in odd places like your wallet in the fridge
          • Getting lost in familiar areas
          • Quick changes in mood or behavior for no reason

How Our  Free Memory Assessment Works

If you are unsure or worried about yourself or a loved one, you can get a MMSE free of charge for ages 50 and up at our Jacksonville Center for Clinical Research location. If you decide to schedule an appointment, plan to be at our facility for about an hour and a half. During that time, one of our experienced clinical coordinators will ask you a series of specific questions about your memory.

The MMSE assesses orientation to time, orientation to place, word recall, calculations, naming, repetition, comprehension, reading, writing and drawing. At your appointment, your clinical coordinator will also have you go through a memory questionnaire, which simply asks about the symptoms you are having on a daily basis.

Afterward, your results will be given to you and there will be a clinical investigator on-site to answer any questions you may have. As mentioned, there is no cure for memory-loss associated diseases, but the strides science has made in recent years has been astounding thanks to clinical trials.

If you or a loved one is experiencing severe memory loss you may want to consider a clinical trial. There are many benefits to participating including one-on-one personal care from a physician and access to the latest experimental medication. Jacksonville Center for Clinical Research, member of ENCORE Research Group is now enrolling in memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease research studies. If you would like to learn more or schedule an appointment, call 904-730-0166.
